The cavalry squadron is depicted in a brief calm moment. The soldiers are checking their weapons and equipment before going out on patrol. One soldier is checking the harness on the team of horses. Others wait patiently to move out. The center of interest is an officer tipping his hat to a young woman. Is he saying goodbye to his wife or a sweetheart? Or is it a chance encounter that holds hope for the future? You can decide. Either way, it's a leave- taking in the midst of war and there may be no return. |

The 2007 Collectible Ornament features Mort Künstler's 2003 Snow Scene A Fleeting Moment. It depicts a tender moment between General Stonewall Jackson and his wife Mary Anna. It was at Winchester, VA in the winter of 1861-62 that Jackson had established headquarters and brought Mary Anna from Lexington. They had little time together during the war, and this was the single longest interlude that they enjoyed. She left Winchester bearing their daughter, Julia, so this was certainly a memorable time for the Jacksons. The painting takes place on Loudoun Street in historic downtown Winchester, VA highlighted by the Loudoun Street Presbyterian Church. The church is still standing today, but its appearance has changed radically since the Civil War. Dedicated in 1841, the current facade and steeple were erected in 1883. The steeple replaced the cupola seen in the painting. |
