The 2007 Collectible Ornament features Mort Künstler's 2003 Snow Scene A Fleeting Moment. It depicts a tender moment between General Stonewall Jackson and his wife Mary Anna. It was at Winchester, VA in the winter of 1861-62 that Jackson had established headquarters and brought Mary Anna from Lexington. They had little time together during the war, and this was the single longest interlude that they enjoyed. She left Winchester bearing their daughter, Julia, so this was certainly a memorable time for the Jacksons.

The painting takes place on Loudoun Street in historic downtown Winchester, VA highlighted by the Loudoun Street Presbyterian Church. The church is still standing today, but its appearance has changed radically since the Civil War. Dedicated in 1841, the current facade and steeple were erected in 1883. The steeple replaced the cupola seen in the painting.

In this scene, Mr. Mort Kunstler captures a Virginia landmark: the Winchester, Virginia Court House. Mr. Kunstler says, "The day is January 6, 1862 and Winchester had a four-inch snowfall. It is 4:40 p.m. about 15 minutes before sunset and the sun has just popped out before setting as the storm passes off to the northeast." He continued, "I've always wanted to paint the Winchester Court House. With Winchester changing hands over 70 times it was in constant use by both the North and South to house prisoners. Thus, I decided to paint it in the winter to feature the court house and not the prisoners that may be in the courtyard during better weather." On May 24, 2003 the Winchester Court House opened as the Old Court House Civil War Museum.

The Soldier of Faith ornament is designed by the ChemArt Company and is completed with a 24 karat gold plated over brass border. Timber Ridge School and Mr. Künstler are pleased to make this ornament available to you.

Mr. Künstler states, “The scene in Soldier of Faith features General Robert E. Lee riding Traveler in front of the St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Orange, Virginia. During the winter of 1863-64, General Lee’s army was in winter camp near Orange and the general prayed at St. Thomas regularly. Those who personally knew General Lee agreed that faith was the foundation of his life. I’ve always admired Lee’s character, which was, of course, founded on his personal faith.” General John B. Gordon observed, “In sunshine and in storm, in victory and in defeat, his heart turned to God.” Lee’s pew at St. Thomas has been preserved and designated by a bronze plaque.

The Soldier of Faith ornament has been produced and is issued exclusively by Timber Ridge School. The School serves emotionally disturbed and learning disabled male students between the ages of 11 and 19. Funds for the improvement of campus programs and facilities are raised through the sale of ornaments. Your purchase of Soldier of Faith will assist in constructing an adventure challenge ropes course to be constructed on the Timber Ridge School campus.
